Function & Features in a Small Space

KBDi Design Awards 2012: Winner – Small Bathroom Design SA.

KBDi Design Awards 2012: Bathroom Designer of the Year
Designer Janine Izzo

The bathroom in this 1910 home was one of the last spaces tackled as part of a long-term renovation and refurbishment of the home. Primarily used by the two adult members of the family, the old bathroom featured original brickwork with crumbling mortar, soft lime internal plaster walls, electrical hazards and a restricted 4-metre-square space.

To overcome these challenges, and create the stunning new bathroom seen here, the Brilliant SA team worked tirelessly with the clients to incorporate their very specific wish list and ensure the space was functional and visually inviting. In particular, the clients wanted to include a bath not smaller than 1700mm in length and initially this seemed impossible. But, with clever solutions and some compromises, the final design ticks all the boxes.

Choices of fittings and fixtures were kept to a minimalist style to ensure the design would be timeless and last for many years. The clients had already selected a tile so these were incorporated into the design as a feature tile to the rear of the niches. Hidden recesses and storage spaces reduce clutter while the lineal style of the wall niches help create an open, floating effect.

For privacy, a switchable glass window was installed which gives the clients the convenience of choosing clear or obscure glass at the push of a button. LED under cabinet feature lighting creates added visual interest and ambience while the wall-hung vanity, with its beautiful Villeroy & Boch La Belle counter top basin, adds warmth to an otherwise stark palette.
